The talent and dedication of the team behind ESI Monitor and FutureTrack are what make us who we are today. This week, we want you to get to know our wonderful Director of Standards and Operations, Ian Corder.
Ian joined the ESI Monitor team in 2020, before FutureTrack was even an idea on the horizon. Since day one his wealth of sustainability knowledge and inspiring leadership skills have empowered the company to hit new heights in terms of our reach, quality of services, and vision for the future.
We did a little Q&A with Ian. Learn all about his background, current role, and more, below.
Q: What is your professional background?
A: After graduating, I worked in business improvement and commercial roles, firstly at Balfour Beatty and then Rolls-Royce, for around six years before joining the UK Environment Agency. I initially worked as a project manager on reservoir decontamination, before moving on to leading the coast and carbon forecasting team for the national flood defence programme. I started working at ESI Monitor in 2020.
I'm a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), and also hold qualifications in project management and accounting from the Association for Project Management and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants respectively. I have an MSc in Environmental Management from the University of Nottingham and a BA in Land Economy from the University of Cambridge. I'm also a member of the CIWEM Climate Change Specialist Panel where I am currently leading on climate stress-testing guidance.
Q: What is your role in ESI Monitor/FutureTrack?
A: I'm Director of Standards and Operations, which means I look after the day-to-day running of the company and make sure the team have everything they need to excel and hit the high standards we need. I'm involved both in defining the vision and the strategy for the company, and executing as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Q: Describe what drives you?
A: I'm motivated by the knowledge we have a limited time window to avoid the worst effects of climate change, and knowing that there is so much that organisations can do now to solve the problem, if they only have the willpower.
Q: What do you want to achieve with ESI Monitor/FutureTrack?
A: Engage, challenge and support the staff at the organisations we work with to achieve their sustainability goals under their own steam - empowered by FutureTrack.
Q: What’s the best thing about working for ESI Monitor/FutureTrack?
A: The chance to have an impact on sustainability, one of the most
important topics of our time.
Q: Tell us about your interests outside of work
A: I enjoy sailing, hill walking, gardening and cooking. I have a 9-month old daughter, so I don't get much spare time!
